Tile Roof Types

Two common tile roofing  materials consist of concrete and clay. Each offer their own benefit when used on their home. To find out more about these materials please read the info provided below.

Concrete Tile Roof

Concrete tiles are made with sand, water and cement that are molded under heat and pressure. Then they are often painted to give them an aesthetic look. When tiles are made out of concrete, they have additional water locks or interlocking ribs so water cannot infiltrate. There are three types of options for concrete tiles such as: low profile , high profile and flat profile. This material is resistant to hail, fire and wind which makes them a safe roofing material.

Clay Tile Roof

Clay tiles are made by molding them with the baking process. Most Clay tiles are sprayed with ceramic to give them an aesthetic look. Clay tiles are beneficial for insulation purposes, They help insulate and isolate unwanted heat and cold from entering your attic area. Clay tiles are resistant to wind and fire.

Although tile roofs are supposed to be a durable roofing material they can encounter damages or break. Overtime tile roofs may become damaged due to improper installation or unaccounted environmental factors like debris. When tiles become damaged, you need to fix them so other damages do not occur like a roof leak. Read more about tile repairs below.

Tile Roof Repair

Tile Roofs are a new and unique options many home owners are requesting as their new homes are built. They are not as traditional as flat or shingle roofs that were popular years ago. Although Tile Roofs are gaining popularity, tile roof repair is a challenge and should only be done by trained professionals.

A trained professional will understand that tiles can break when walking on them with full body weight, so a repairman will have to locate any roof leaks without causing more damage/breaking any tiles. Roof Tiles have gained popularity because they are often a more durable material that lasts for years. However, when a tile breaks for whatever reason it can lead to home damage or a leaking roof.

*Tiles can be broken from shipping process, mishandled, or by walking on them. Sometimes severe weather can cause issues like having debris fall on top of your roof, thus cracking or breaking a tile.

Tile Roof Underlayment

The underlayment used under tile roofs serves as a weather guard prior to tile being installed. When a tile roof is installed correctly, it acts as a water shedding system. Underlayment for roofs have to follow governing building codes and industry standards. Tile underlayment is typically a single layer of Type II asphalt based felt. All materials must be identified with ASTM ratings since they identify products that meet adequate performance.
However, South Florida requires other minimum material requirements. South Florida requires felts to be rolled with sand, mica, or powder on the surface. These materials help with prevention of self-adhesion during storage processes.

Building codes require that single layer felts be installed with headlaps of 2-4 inches with a minimum endlap of 6 inches.

To identify a leak on a tile roof we must remove the problem area tiles. We then use a nail or screw to mark the upmost drip point to the lowest.

Sometimes we will need to take other precautions such as a flashlight test or a hose test because a visual inspection may not suffice in all situations.

Slate Roof Repair

Slate Roofs are made of slate or a highly durable metamorphic rock. In order to lay slate on a roof- this rock material is created into stone or shingles so it can be laid down on your roof top so it looks natural and elegant.

Slate Roof Repair is not a low cost repair. A Slate Roof is requires special material and skill to properly lay the material so it is done correctly and so that no other damage can occur. Slate Roofs are one of the most durable roofs and long-lasting. Most repairs are needed when there is an issue with valley linings, tiles, or metal. We do not recommend just anyone repairing your slate roof. Slate Roof Repair requires great skills and knowledge, so call us today to schedule your Free Estimate.
